Which NFL Fans Drink the Most?
As part of our How America Drinks™ series, the BACtrack analytics team analyzed over 28,000 anonymous BAC results to determine which fanbase drank the most during the 2023-2024 NFL season.
Observations
- The BAC levels of the Top 5 teams are soaring high - at or above 0.080% (the legal threshold in most states to be arrested for driving while intoxicated). Looks like these fans are ready for a wild ride... but not behind the wheel.
- Despite their reputation and a trove of evidence on social media, the Bills didn't make it on the list. Perhaps Buffalo Bills safety Jordan Poyer's commitment to sobriety has had a sobering impact on fans.
- The team playing this year's Super Bowl - Kansas City Chiefs - tops (bottoms?) the Bottom 5 list. On Sunday, the Chiefs are considered more likely to score lower - and their fans' 2023 BAC levels match up.
Top 5 Teams vs. Bottom 5 Teams
Below are the team fanbases with the highest and lowest alcohol consumption. The right column indicates whether or not this team made it to the playoffs - a measure we used to analyze performance and how it affects fan drinking (more on that below).
What's the Relationship Between Team Performance and Fan Alcohol Consumption?
The box plot below visualizes the distribution of BAC averages by team performance. The graph uses the median to represent the central tendency within each box. We found that fans of the four most successful teams were more likely to have lower average BAC levels than the rest of the league.
How America Drinks™: Super Bowl LVIII Report
On February 11th, while you were tracking the score, we were tracking the BAC (blood alcohol content) levels for over 1,000 breathalyzer users across the US to answer questions like: Who drank more, Chiefs or 49ers fans? How did the game going into overtime affect BAC levels? How much more did America drink on Super Bowl Sunday 2024?

[BONUS] Who Drinks More: Chiefs Fans or Swifties?
The budding romance between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce has ignited tensions among Chiefs fans - many of whom are less than thrilled to have their football TV coverage interrupted by glimpses of Taylor - and the fervent Taylor Swift fans (her "Swifties") who support her.
In light of this clash, we at BACtrack wanted to join the conversation by doing what we do best - tracking BAC levels - to compare the drinking habits of Swifties and Kansas City Chiefs fans.

Methodology
2023-2024 NFL Season Data
- Data was collected anonymously from users of the BACtrack app, which syncs with smartphone compatible BACtrack breathalyzers. Data used in this report was collected from U.S. users who opted into sharing their data by activating the BACtrack App data storage, having location services turned on, and allowing the BACtrack app to access their smartphone’s Bluetooth.
- Over 28,000 unique BAC tests were reviewed for this report.
- To identify where fans of each NFL team are located, we utilized a map of NFL fan allegiance using Twitter data created by Matt Sorenson in order to associate BAC results with NFL teams across the country.
- Data represents positive BAC readings. Regular season game data represents unique BAC tests collected anonymously at 6AM the day of game to 6AM the day after the game.
- Each team’s specific game schedule was used for their respective fans’ data. Regular season 2023-24 NFL games ran from September 2023 to January 2024.
- This data does not represent data from all users.
